SEMG: Surface Electromyography

sEMG stands for surface electromyography which is a device which measures the amount of electrical activity your muscles release when they are contracting, more commonly known as muscle tension.

In the clinic we use a state of the art sEMG device, called Myovision which is supported by numerous quality research papers. This is currently the only device which enables the muscle tension around the spine to be evaluated in the standing posture.

Muscles have a tendency to ‘brace’ in response to spinal joint dysfunctions known as Vertebral Subluxations. These subluxations may create nerve interference which can affect muscles around the spine. The sEMG shows the muscular component of the spinal joint dysfunction.

The chiropractor’s job is to detect and correct these Vertebral Subluxations by a simple and effective procedure called an ‘adjustment’.

Key Benefits:

  • Safe: no electricity is transferred into the patient.
  • Very efficient: a full spine test can be done in approx. 90 seconds.
  • Educational: patients can see a visual representation of their muscle tension.
  • Helps monitor patient progress: scans can be repeated at intervals to compare changes in function.
