Chiropractic concerns itself primarily with the relationship between the structure of the spine and the function of the nervous system and the health of the human body. There is an emphasis on spinal manipulation or adjustment. By restoring normal function to the interlocking spinal joints and removing irritation to the nervous system a wide variety of health benefits may be achieved, including pain relief.
Everyday wear and tear, accidents, poor posture, a lack of exercise, old injuries and stress can all cause dysfunction of the spinal joints which chiropractors call ‘subluxations’. These ‘subluxations’ may be a source of irritation to your nervous system resulting in pain and or other symptoms in various parts of your body.
To address spinal joint dysfunction, chiropractors perform manipulation or adjustments to the area to restore normal function. This can be performed by hand or with a specialised instrument called the Activator. An adjustment may help to relieve nerve irritation, relax muscle tightness and improve joint mobility thereby improving the function of that part of the body. At Heathcote Chiropractic Clinic we predominately utilise the Activator instrument and Technique.
The Activator instrument is a specialised hand –held adjusting device that has been scientifically designed to give a very specific, ‘low-force’ adjustment. It delivers a controlled light and fast thrust, without causing undue strain to patients. Activator adjustments are so quick and controlled your body’s muscles are less likely to resist, allowing for a more precise and exact adjustment. One of the unique features of the Activator Technique is that it allows the chiropractor to ‘zero’ in on the exact area of the body that is causing the problems.
What to expect on your visits
You can expect our full, undivided attention in dealing with your problem professionally, confidentially and with empathy. Your visits to our clinic will involve:
On arriving at the clinic you will be greeted by one of our friendly team who will ask you to complete some brief paperwork which enables us to obtain information about your personal details, the areas you are suffering with and your general health goals.
Thereafter you will be introduced to your chiropractor who will ask many questions related to the problem you are experiencing, as well as your general health and medical history. A thorough examination involving orthopaedic, neurological, postural and chiropractic tests will performed to help formulate a diagnosis as to the underlying cause of your problem. A sEMG of the muscles around your spine will be performed to assess the amount of tension present. If further investigation is required i.e. x-rays, MRI scans or blood tests, this can be arranged either privately or through your GP. You will then be booked in for your Report of Findings visit as soon as possible thereafter.
Report of Findings
All of our findings will be presented to you in a clear and simple format to help you understand the underlying cause of your condition. If appropriate, our recommendations for chiropractic care will be presented and any possible risk factors explained. Any questions you may have will be fully addressed. It is important that you are fully informed before deciding to consent to chiropractic care. Thereafter your first adjustment will be performed and any recommendations for home care or exercises explained. Your next adjustment according to your care programme will then be arranged.
Dependant on your care programme, you will be asked to return for further adjustments at specific intervals. It is vital to your recovery that the frequency of these adjustments is maintained as it can affect the outcome of your care and results. If an appointment needs to be changed we would encourage a further appointment to be made as soon as possible. The duration of subsequent visits may vary dependant on how many adjustments/ checks need to be performed. We understand that life today is very busy and we therefore aim not to keep you in the clinic any longer than is absolutely necessary.
Dependant on your care programme you will be re-assessed at specific intervals. This will involve analysis of any residual symptoms and functional tests i.e. sEMG, to evaluate if you are on track with your health goals. These can also be valuable opportunities to ask further questions.
If you are unsure if Chiropractic care is suitable for you or you would like to speak to a chiropractor before deciding to book in for an Initial Consultation, a complimentary ‘Chiro-chat’ can be arranged. This can provide an opportunity for you to find out more about chiropractic and ask as many questions as you would like. This can be booked through contacting our reception.
