Straighten Up Your Posture

Research has indicated that over the past few years, increasing numbers of people are suffering with back pain. This results in billions of pounds of lost income and revenue due to absence at work, sickness benefit payments and medical costs to the NHS, not to mention reduction in the quality of peoples’ lives.

The Chiropractic profession would like to show that chiropractors are involved in positive health issues by taking up the mantle to bring attention onto this issue and showing people ways they can help themselves. We realise that there is a need to engender interest and commitment in people to develop better health habits. Specifically we would like the public to know that there are positive ways in which chiropractic can help people to intervene in their own back health.

Increasingly throughout the UK, people of all ages are suffering with back pain and discomfort and a large proportion of this can be attributed to poor posture. As a nation we have become very ‘stop start’ in our lifestyles; dashing about one minute, full of stress and time pressure and then being very sedentary for long periods, with driving long distances, working with and  playing computer games and watching TV etc. This all has a negative impact on our posture, lives and wellbeing.

The Straighten Up exercise programme was initially developed in the US and introduced to the UK by the British Chiropractic Association. Due to the huge success it is now being introduced to the rest Europe. It consists of a three minute exercise programme specifically developed to improve posture, flexibility and strength of the spine. It can be performed standing by children and adults of all ages and does not require any special equipment. Ideally it should be performed daily to obtain maximum benefit. (Like brushing your teeth!)

We would therefore like to spread the positive benefits that the exercise programme could deliver to the local community and would be happy to send a leaflet or provide a Straighten Up workshop to any local businesses, schools or health care clinics who may be interested in improving  their posture. Alternatively anyone can attend one of our free Straighten Up workshops which will be held during Chiropractic Awareness Week from the 14th – 20th April 2008.
